How to price a carpet cleaning job
Carpet cleaning is often priced per room, with a separate price for each flight of stairs. A minimum callout makes sure small jobs are still worth your time. This calculator adds up rooms, stairs and extras using your own rates.
- Count each carpeted room included in the job and enter your price per room.
- Count the flights of carpeted stairs, if any, and enter your price per flight.
- Set your minimum callout. This is the lowest base price you will charge before any optional extras.
- Add any agreed extras such as stain treatment, furniture moving and travel. Leave anything that does not apply at 0.
- Enter the tax rate that applies to your business and check the total before and including tax.
Tips and common mistakes
- Agree what counts as a room before you quote. A large lounge or open-plan area may be worth more than one standard room price.
- Ask about stains, pets and how long since the last clean. Heavy soiling takes longer and may need treatment.
- Tell customers up front that some stains may not come out fully. Setting expectations early avoids complaints.
- Set your minimum callout high enough to cover travel, setup and pack-down, so a single small room is still worth doing.
Questions
How much should I charge for carpet cleaning per room?
Base your room price on how long a typical room takes you, your hourly costs, chemicals and equipment wear, plus profit. Check what is fair in your local market, but do not simply copy a competitor. Charge more for large rooms or heavy soiling.
Should carpet cleaners have a minimum charge?
Most do, because travel, setup and pack-down take the same time whether you clean one room or five. A minimum callout makes sure small jobs still cover your costs. The calculator uses your minimum as the base price before optional extras.
How do you price carpet cleaning for stairs?
Stairs are usually priced per flight because they take longer than their area suggests. Time a flight on a few jobs and set your price from that. Enter the number of flights and your price per flight in the calculator.
Should I charge extra for moving furniture?
Moving furniture adds time and some risk, so many cleaners charge for it or ask the customer to clear the room first. Say clearly in your quote which you expect. The calculator has a separate line for furniture moving.
How long does carpet take to dry after cleaning?
Drying time depends on the cleaning method, the carpet, airflow and the weather. Explain these factors to customers and suggest simple steps like opening windows or running fans. Avoid promising an exact time you cannot control.
