How to price a lawn mowing visit
A fair mowing price starts with the lawn area and your rate per square metre (or per square foot). Add the extras that genuinely apply, such as edging, travel or green waste, and check the mowing charge against your minimum visit charge. For regular clients, the monthly figure helps them see what repeat mowing will cost.
- Measure the lawn area included in each visit. Break odd shapes into rectangles, multiply length by width for each, then add them together in square metres or square feet.
- Choose metres or feet, then enter your price per square metre or square foot. The calculator multiplies it by the area for the mowing charge.
- Enter your minimum visit charge. If the mowing comes to less, the calculator adds a minimum charge adjustment so small lawns still cover your time, fuel and setup. Extras are added on top.
- Add flat charges only where they apply: edging, difficult terrain such as slopes or obstacles, green waste removal if you take clippings away, and a single travel charge.
- Add a one-off charge for overgrown grass on the first visit. Keep it out of the regular price, because later visits should be quicker.
- Choose the visit frequency (one-off, weekly, fortnightly or every four weeks), any regular-client discount, your tax rate and whether your prices are before or including tax. You see the price per visit and, for regular visits, the regular visit price, the average month and the yearly value.
Tips and common mistakes
- Measure rather than guess. Pacing out a lawn or reading it off a map tool is fine for a quote, but confirm on the first visit and adjust before the client signs up for repeat work.
- The regular-client discount comes off the mowing line only, not the minimum charge adjustment, travel, waste removal or other extras, so your fixed costs stay covered on every visit.
- Do not hide a first-visit catch-up in the regular rate. Quote it separately so the client understands why the first visit costs more.
- Set your rate from your real costs: your time, fuel, equipment wear, insurance and the profit you need. Then check the price against what nearby businesses charge.
Questions
How much should I charge to mow a lawn?
Work it out from the lawn area multiplied by your rate per square metre or square foot, then add edging, travel or waste removal if they apply. Set a minimum visit charge so small lawns still pay for your time and travel. Rates vary a lot by location, so base yours on your own costs and check local prices.
How do I measure a lawn for mowing?
Split the lawn into simple shapes such as rectangles and triangles. Multiply length by width for each rectangle, and half of base times height for each triangle, then add them up. Leave out garden beds, paths and other areas you will not mow.
Should I charge more for the first mow?
If the grass is long or overgrown, yes. A first visit often takes longer and creates more clippings. Quote it as a one-off charge so the regular visit price stays the same.
How do I work out a monthly price for lawn mowing?
The calculator takes the regular visit price and multiplies it by 52, 26 or 13 visits a year for weekly, fortnightly or every four weeks, then divides by 12. Weekly and fortnightly visits do not fit evenly into calendar months, so an average gives the client a steady figure. One-off charges, such as an overgrown first cut, are left out of the monthly figure.
Should I charge per square metre or a flat rate for mowing?
Pricing by area keeps your quotes consistent between small and large lawns. Many operators combine it with a minimum visit charge so tiny lawns still cover travel and setup. You can still show the client a single visit price once you have worked it out.
