How to price a garden cleanup

Garden cleanups are easiest to price by team hours: how many people, how long each will work, and your hourly rate. You then adjust for heavier work and add waste removal, disposal, equipment hire and access charges as separate lines. This keeps the quote clear and stops hidden costs eating into your profit.

  1. Decide how many gardeners you need on site and estimate the hours for each person, not the combined team hours.
  2. If you are unsure of the time, open Work out the hours from the area. Enter the garden area and the area one gardener clears in an hour on your own past jobs. The calculator splits the hours across your gardeners, rounds up to the nearest quarter hour and fills in hours per gardener.
  3. Enter your hourly rate per gardener. The calculator multiplies gardeners by hours per gardener by your rate to get the labour cost.
  4. Choose the cleanup type: seasonal tidy-up, overgrown garden, leaf and debris removal, or other. It fills in a percentage adjustment on the labour for heavier work. Treat it as a starting point and change it to match your experience.
  5. Add green waste removal, any separate disposal or tip fee, equipment hire, supplies not covered by your hourly rate, difficult access and a single travel charge.
  6. Add tax at the rate that applies to your business and check the total before you send the quote.

Tips and common mistakes

  • Keep a record of how long real jobs take per square metre or square foot. Your own clearing rate is far more reliable than any general figure.
  • Price disposal separately from removal. Tip or disposal fees can change with the type and volume of waste, so check them before quoting.
  • Visit the site or ask for photos first. Overgrowth, rubbish under shrubs and tight access can double the time of a job that looks simple.
  • Only add supplies that sit outside your hourly rate, so you do not charge for the same thing twice.

Questions

How much should I charge for a garden cleanup?

Multiply the number of gardeners by the hours each will work and your hourly rate. Add a percentage for heavier work, then add waste removal, disposal fees, equipment hire and travel. Set your hourly rate from your costs and what local businesses charge.

How long does a garden cleanup take?

It depends on the size of the garden, how overgrown it is and how much waste there is. A good way to estimate is to divide the garden area by the area one person clears per hour on similar jobs you have done. Then divide by the number of people on the team.

Should I quote a garden cleanup by the hour or a fixed price?

You can work it out by the hour and still give the client a fixed price. Estimating team hours first makes the fixed price accurate. State what is included, such as waste removal, so there are no surprises.

How do I charge for green waste removal?

Add it as a separate line covering loading and taking the waste away. If the tip or disposal site charges you, add that fee as its own line too. This shows the client exactly what they are paying for.
