How to price a hedge trimming job

Hedge trimming is usually priced by the length of hedge, then adjusted for height and how much of the hedge you are cutting. Extras such as detailed shaping, green waste removal and access equipment are best quoted as separate flat charges. The calculator checks the trimming charge against your minimum visit charge before the extras are added.

  1. Measure the length of hedge included in the visit in metres or feet. For hedges that turn corners, measure each straight run and add them together.
  2. Choose the hedge height, up to 2 m or over 2 m (6.5 ft if you work in feet), and the trimming scope: one side, both sides, or both sides and top. Taller hedges and a bigger scope take more time, ladders or platforms.
  3. Enter your price per metre (or per foot) for a standard height hedge trimmed on both sides. The calculator multiplies it by the length.
  4. Your height and scope choices fill in an adjustment as a percentage. Treat it as a starting point and change it to suit your own experience.
  5. Add flat charges for detailed shaping, green waste removal, special access equipment and travel, where they apply.
  6. Enter your minimum visit charge. If the adjusted trimming charge comes to less, the calculator adds the difference before extras. Then add tax at the rate that applies to your business.

Tips and common mistakes

  • Look at the hedge before quoting if you can. Thickness, overgrowth and what sits underneath, such as beds or glasshouses, can change the time a lot.
  • Agree who removes the clippings. Taking waste away costs time and disposal fees, so price it separately if the client wants it.
  • Check access on both sides. If one side is in a neighbour's property or against a wall, confirm you can reach it before you commit to a price for both sides.
  • Quote topiary, cloud pruning and other shaping as a separate line rather than burying it in the per-metre rate.

Questions

How much should I charge for hedge trimming?

Price by the length of hedge multiplied by your rate per metre or foot, then adjust for height and scope. Add flat charges for waste removal, shaping, access equipment and travel. Base your rate on your own costs and local market prices, and set a minimum visit charge for small jobs.

How do you measure a hedge for trimming?

Measure along the length of the hedge with a tape or measuring wheel, in metres or feet. Note the height and whether you are cutting one side, both sides or the top. These three things together drive the time the job takes.

Do you charge more for tall hedges?

Usually, yes. Taller hedges need ladders, platforms or extra care, and take longer to cut and clear. A percentage adjustment on your standard rate is a simple way to reflect this.

Should hedge trimming include taking away the clippings?

Only if you agree it with the client. Loading, transport and disposal add cost, so list green waste removal as its own line. Some clients prefer to compost clippings themselves to keep the price down.

How do I price a hedge trim for both sides?

Set your standard per-metre rate for both sides of a hedge of normal height, then use a percentage adjustment for less work, such as one side only, or more work, such as extra height. Confirm you have access to both sides before quoting.
