How to price a leak repair callout
Leak repairs are hard to quote before you arrive, because finding the leak can take longer than fixing it. A callout fee with some included time, plus extra time, detection and parts, keeps the price fair for both sides. This calculator builds the estimate from your own rates.
- Choose the leak type, set your callout fee and enter how many minutes it includes. Enter 0 minutes if you charge all time on site separately.
- Estimate the total minutes on site, including the callout allowance, and enter your additional hourly labour rate for time beyond it.
- Choose how to charge extra time: by the minute, or in 15-minute, 30-minute or full-hour blocks.
- Add a leak detection charge if you need separate detection work, and an access and making good charge if you will open up and restore a wall, floor or ceiling on this visit.
- Enter parts and fittings, set your materials markup and add an after-hours surcharge for urgent calls.
- Enter your tax rate, choose whether prices show before or including tax, and check the totals.
Tips and common mistakes
- Tell the customer early that finding a hidden leak can take time. It avoids arguments about the bill later.
- Be clear about making good. Say whether you will restore finishes such as tiles or paint, or only close up the access.
- If you find more damage than expected, stop and quote the extra work separately.
- Enter your own labour cost per hour to see your profit. It stays off the estimate.
Questions
How much does a plumber charge to fix a leak?
It depends on your rates, how long it takes to find and fix the leak, and the parts needed. A dripping tap and a burst pipe behind a wall are very different jobs. Use the calculator with your own callout fee, hourly rate and parts prices.
How do plumbers charge for leak detection?
Leak detection can need special equipment and extra time, so many plumbers charge it separately from the repair. Set a flat detection charge that covers your equipment and time. If the leak is easy to find, leave it at 0.
What does making good mean on a plumbing quote?
Making good means restoring the area you opened to reach the pipe, such as patching a wall, floor or ceiling. It can be as simple as closing an access hole or as big as retiling. Spell out exactly what you include.
Should I charge extra for an emergency burst pipe callout?
Many businesses add an after-hours surcharge for urgent work outside normal hours. Agree it with the customer before you attend. The calculator adds it as a flat fee once, or as a percentage of the additional labour.
Can I give a fixed price for a leak repair?
It is hard to do before you have found the leak. A callout fee with included time and an hourly rate for extra time is fairer when the cause is unknown. Once you know what is wrong, you can offer a fixed price for the repair.
