How to price a power point (outlet) installation
Pricing a power point job comes down to the number of outlets, the materials, the labour time and any extra cable, circuit or access work. This calculator adds up your own rates so the quote covers everything. Electrical work must be done by appropriately licensed people where the law requires it.
- Choose the power point type and enter how many points you are installing.
- Enter your materials price per point, covering the outlet and standard materials.
- Estimate the total labour hours for all points and enter your hourly labour rate. Add a callout fee if you charge one.
- Add cable or circuit work as one charge if the job needs new cable runs or a new circuit. Measure the runs first so you can price the cable accurately.
- Add charges for difficult access, separate testing and after-hours work if they apply.
- Set your materials markup and tax rate, choose whether prices show before or including tax, and check the totals.
Tips and common mistakes
- Check where the new point will be fed from before you quote. A point close to existing wiring is far quicker than one that needs a new circuit.
- Ask about wall types and access. Brick, concrete, tiles and tight roof or underfloor spaces all add time.
- If you charge for testing separately, list it so the customer can see it.
- Enter your own labour cost per hour to see your profit. It never appears on the estimate.
Questions
How much does it cost to install a power point?
It depends on how many points you install, the type of outlet, how far they are from existing wiring and how easy access is. A point that needs a new circuit or long cable run costs more. Use the calculator with your own materials prices and hourly rate.
How long does it take to install a power outlet?
It depends on the distance from existing wiring, the wall type and access. Adding a point next to an existing one is often quicker than running new cable through walls or ceilings. Keep track of your own job times to estimate better.
Do you need a licensed electrician to install a power point?
In many places, yes. Rules about who can do electrical work differ around the world, so check the rules where you work. Unlicensed electrical work can be unsafe and may affect insurance.
Should electricians charge per power point or by the hour?
Both work. A per-point price is simple for customers, but it still needs to be built from your materials, labour time and overheads. This calculator uses materials per point plus total labour hours, so you can see both parts.
Does adding a power point need a new circuit?
Not always. It depends on the load on the existing circuit and the rules where you work. If a new circuit is needed, add it as cable or circuit work on the quote.
